International Workers' Day
In conmemoration of those thousand workers who took the streets damanding the eight-hour workday and better working conditions on May 1st, 1886. Although the protests took place all over the country, it was in Chicago where the demands were most intense, with several days of strikes. Like so many demands, the petition was not well received by the ruling class, so reprisals and violence in the streets escalated.
A year and a half later, several protest leaders (August Spies, Albert Parsons, Adolf Fischer, George Engel and Louis Lingg) were sentenced to death by the United States of America. Two others were sentenced to life imprisonment. Three years later, in 1889, the Congress of the Second International, held in Paris, approved the commemoration of Workers' Day every May 1st, as a memorial to those martyrs of the working class of Chicago.
